First Load Of Boxes Packed!

Were moving this summer. Across the state to the Spokane area. We really love the Idaho panhandle too. We'll be going to check out rentals within the next month. Anyways... My first major hurdle in packing is done and I'm feeling really good! Our laundry room has always been considered “The Pit Of Dispair” It's always been stuffed with large clear bins filled with extra fabrics and art supplies. Over the years it's also become the place to put all that stuff that we still wanted to keep but didn't know where to put. I wish I had taken a before photo. I started out slowly bringing out random things and re-boxing anything that we were keeping. It ended up that almost ½ of the stuff ended up in the goodwill, garage sale, and garbage piles. I really couldn't believe the amount of stuff that had piled up.

I'm following this woman’s packing method and absolutely loving it! If your moving and some of your stuff will end up in storage this is certainly the way to go. I won't have any trouble finding things when we unpack our home or when we search the storage area for something.

Here is a picture of the “Pit Of Dispair” area in the laundry room now. All nicely cleaned out with neatly labeled boxes with plenty of room for more boxes as I work on the other rooms.  Origionally this area was filled almost 3/4 of the way up that window and the shelves were stuffed.
And, here is our garage sale pile. It goes all the way back to the slider. And, with the garbage and the goodwill the pile was as tall as the table. I'm not sure where to put our garage sale stuff. Hubby is working on his car in the garage and there just isn't room... so this stuff may stay inside for quite a few weeks.
On another note, I'm feeling better today. I found some free maternity clothes on Craigslist from the nicest women ever. They are in the wash and I'm excited to try everything on. The pants will all be to big, but we all know I can alter them on the sewing machine!

Also, just check out my freezer. All those meals and readied ingredients just make me smile. Tonight, my hubby wasn't hungry due to a late lunch so it was “Every Man For Himself” night. Ali ate a bean burrito and Ray made Mac & Cheese for her and Cael. It was her first time making it alone and she smiled the whole time. She was so proud to sit down and eat it with her little brother!

What?! Baby #4?

Yep... you see my sidebar and the above photo right.  We are expecting baby #4 on December 1st. Our little one in the ultrasound above is 13 weeks 4 days along.

This little one is a surprise for us.  We are still in a bit of shock even though we are feeling excited about him/her.  I mean really.... just look at that profile.  For my past 3 babies the first ultrasound was done between 6 and 8 weeks for dating purposes.  Those ultrasounds look mostly like a peanut.  This little one shocked me.  He/she is a fully formed little person about the size of a lemon all curled up.  Perfect spindly legs and arms.  Pearly spine, stomach, bladder, and that beautiful fluttering heart.

How am I feeling?  Well,  I'm tired, cranky, nausaus, weepy and feeling huge.  None of my regular pants fit.  So Saturday I pulled out some older pants from my closet and revamped them into maternity pants.  They are much more comfy, but I'm still in that "I feel huge, but you can't tell I'm pregnant" stage.  This little one is pushing out much much faster than any of my last 3 did.  My midwife says it's because my muscles are good and stretched out by now.... yeah.  Soon shirts will be a problem too.  As most of the ones I have still fit but don't cover the maternity band.  That's ok though... just more sewing fun to be had.

How are the kids and hubby?  Well, the kids were shocked but happy.  And, of course Cael won't really understand what's happening until baby arrives.  Hubby is doing good too although he is certainly craving a good meal.  I can't seam to pull myself into the kitchen to cook lately.  I sorta fixed that today though.  I did some good freezer meal cooking today while I felt good enough.  There are at least 12 meals in there to help out on those days when I just don't want to eat... which is pretty much every day.

I figured I would kinda track my pregnancy here.  So far I've had just the 1 appointment with my midwife.  All is well but she wasn't able to find the heartbeat.  So, she sent me off to get an ultrasound.  I wasn't surprised by this.  It wasn't until my 16th week or so that they were able to get Cael's heartbeat.  Anyways.... the ultrasound went fine.  The tech said "Did you know you have a tilted uterus?"   Yes, I knew.. but just kinda forgot about.  She told me that that was why the midwife couldn't find the heartbeat.

Weight: -10 lbs
Food Cravings... well all I want to eat is bagels and chocolate.

I Think I Have A Problem With My Brain Being Missing.....

The past 2 months have moved by like a blowing fog. Most days I honestly couldn't tell you the date, let alone what day of the week it is. The only things that seem to be marking the passing of time are my rapidly growing new son, the weather, and my two daughters who are so very excited for the upcoming holidays.
As I sit here listening to the laundry going, the smelling the crock pot doing it's job, and watching Cael sleep, I find myself itchy to do more than just the "new baby in the house" stuff. And, yet I'm certainly not bored. Caring for my new son fills most of my days. And, he honestly gives me a sort of peaceful calm. The kind of calm that makes it hard to feel motivated to do anything else except stare at him and play with him. Things like laundry, keeping the kitchen clean, cooking, and just general house cleaning is all I've really been doing while my girls are at school. Some days those things don't even get done. Evenings are filled with homework, dinner, and the general craziness of raising a family.
I think what I'm looking for is more concentrated sewing/art time. I have so many ideas for Christmas presents and Cael really needs more diapers sewn up. Trying to find any kind of rhythm to my day so I can do those things is nearly impossible. My brain just can't keep up..... I used to be able to keep everything in order in my head. You know.... the things that your family members should do/remember but always forget so you have to remember for them. Things like: grab that extra coat , bring snacks, grab the water bottles for Ray's soccer practices, lunches in the backpacks, etc. Now it seems that if my family forgets those things that are normally theirs to do, I'll forget too. Oh well.....
For now I think I'll just feed my son (who's now awake) and maybe cut out a diaper or two if he's up for sitting and watching me. Oh... and maybe when the girls get home from school they can help me find my brain. I have a feeling that it's somewhere upstairs in the bedroom where sleep used to be.

Being The Duck.....

My grandmother has a saying. "When you find yourself getting stressed or worried... Be a Duck. Let the water roll off your back and just keep swimming along." (not her exact quote, but it's the meaning) Today I found myself trying hard to be the duck.

As I was quilting my daughters I-Spy quilt my sewing machine broke. It just stopped completing it's full rotation. Almost like it was hitting or jamming on something metal. I got quotes to have it fixed/serviced. The cost of that is almost the cost of the whole machine. What's a girl to do? I have two quilts to finish before Christmas and 4 commissions lined up for after Christmas. Well... I got out my screwdrivers and took off the front panel of my machine. I was hoping to see a broken part or something glaringly wrong. Yeah.... not a chance. It looks perfect. I cleaned it up a bit and decided to work on my stack of Christmas cards. 3 hours later I took one more peak at the machine and gave the wheel one more turn.... and it turned! All the way around. It's sticking a bit on something, but now I'm thinking that a better cleaning and an oiling will do the trick. Hopefully my little Brother XR7700 will be running full speed by tomorrow. Otherwise this duck may get very soggy.

Finding Inspiration

I found myself starring at my doll cabinet today. Due to the "staging" of our home, it no longer contains all my dolls. Now, it's used for neatly folded fabrics and a few "inexpensive" dolls. My favorite BJD's have been exiled to a drawer in my desk. Not glamorous, but it's UV protected and away from prospective buyers nosing around the house.
As I was standing there starring at the contents of the cabinet I found myself feeling very uninspired. The house is sterile and almost museum like. I'm afraid to get anything out and actually start a project even though all I want to do is create something. I knew I needed to find the fabric that I needed for my commission and get started, but I just kept starring at my first BJD, Vena. My mom dressed her all up for show and she was sitting there starring at me with her dolly eyes. I looked at the bomber jacket that I had made...and her jeans.... and her tank top and suddenly found the inspiration that I so needed. I grabbed the fabric I was looking for and I got to work . It's been weeks and weeks since I've used my sewing machine for making doll clothes. It feels so good to be sewing again and I'm so grate full for the commission that I'm working on. I drafted and cut out three patterns today and after this post I'm going to sit down and start sewing.

Heywood-Wakefield China Hutch!

I've been looking for a china hutch/buffet ever since we moved into this house. I've seen many china hutch's at garage sales, thrift stores, and antique malls. But, non of them appealed to either our taste or our pocketbooks. We were looking for something unique, with simple details with a slight art deco / retro feel to it. But not at all scrolly or gawdy.

Quite unexpectedly while shopping at the local Goodwill I saw this one! We were walking do the checkout line when I saw it and I knew that second that it had to be mine. Fortunately my hubby loves it just as much as I do. So, we paid for it, drove home to get the truck, went back to pick it up and put it in the middle of the living room to be cleaned.
It cleaned up beautifully. I'm soooo loving this beautiful piece of furniture. I would love to know more about it. It says : "Heywood Wakefield" inside the drawer and the back is stamped " May 16, 1961" model M2961(on the buffet) and M2962 (on the hutch). I've looked it up but I can only seem to find information about their furniture for the early 40's or so. There is a book on their furniture that I intend to track down at our local library. It's not a piece of furniture that I ever intend on letting go of.

Under A Cloud

It's been a very very long week. I won't go into to much detail. But, I will say that there have been 2 deaths in the family this week. All I want to do is sit and knit, spin, or make anime characters. My daughter and I found a few free online anime sites to create your own avatars or characters. It's been a very good distraction this morning. The one above really says it all.

Carding, Spinning, Family, New Truck, And A Regency Portrait

It's been almost a month since I last posted. It doesn't seem like it's been that long. There has been a lot going on around the house. Both kids and hubby have been sick, we've bought a truck, my parents came to visit, and I've been sewing, carding, spinning, and cleaning up a storm.
I'm still loving this drum carder. I'm almost out of fibers to dye and card though. (Shhh... Don't tell hubby that I've bought more and it's on it's way.) My only problem right now is that I want to spin up everything that I card. Which is bad because I want to sell some of my batts on Etsy. I have a few listed up right now, but the urge to grab them and spin them is terrible!

I found some silk dyes at the Goodwill a few weeks ago. It's amazing what you can find there. I never in a million years though that I would find good fiber dyes there. They were kinda pricey (a whopping $1.00 each). I bought two packages of them which equaled 15 colors in all and all the bottles were full. I looked them up online and learned that they are silk dyes from France. Which are good to use on all natural fibers. Their regular retail price is $4.00 each, so I got a great deal. Yeah! I did a test run with small amounts of fiber with each color to check out how well they would dye up. And, I'm so pleased. I now have lots of colors to play with.
Here on the home front, the kids and hubby have been sick, Ray lost her second tooth, Alaina has gotten a black belt in her recorder class, and my hubby bought a truck. He's been really wanting something to haul stuff around in. We seam to make a lot of dump runs, donation runs, and wood hauling lately. So, this thing will come in very handy. He was smiling like a fool day before yesterday when he came home with the perfect canopy for the back. It's the same blue and everything. It's the taller type with good windows. When we go camping this summer, we could sleep in the thing if we wanted it's so big.
I really haven't been sewing as much as usual this month. I really wanted to get back into the groove, but nothing that I have patterns for was calling to me. I was watching a Jane Austen movie and got very inspired to make some regency outfits. During my research I found this great portrait. I don't know what it is that I love so much about it, I just do. I ended up drafting a pattern for a with a wrap style empire waist dress. I love it. I also knitted up a shawl to go with it and have plans for another dress. I'll do a full post on this dress and the other regency stuff I'm working on later today or tomorrow. Right now, I'm off to make a pair of jeans for a commission.

Fiber Goodness Of All Kinds!

It's been a good two days. Yesterday morning I purchased my fiber for the year. (I won't be limiting myself to just this fiber...but I will try and be good) I purchased over 8 pounds of various wools, superwash, nylon, etc from The Sheep Shed. And, I bought a few gorgeous rovings and exotic fibers from Etsy. The exotic fibers include hemp, bamboo, and flax. I didn't even know I could spin flax. I'm so excited to receive it all. I will be a spinning and dyeing maniac! And, to top it all off. For my birthday my hubby bought me a drum carder!!! After tons of research I decided on "The Kitten Carder" from fancykitty.com. With all the fibers that I have coming, this thing will be getting a great workout. I still have some random mill ends from a grab bag that I ordered from The Sheep Shed last year, that really needs to be carded before I spin it up.
And, just because I needed some kind of picture to post. Here is a stack of yummy fabrics that I bought at Anna Lena's in Long Beach last week. Soooo pretty. I got the backing that I need to make a quilt that I have been meaning to make for a year now. And, I got some other fun fabrics to make... I don't know... something. I'm such a fiber hoarder!

Completely Unmotivated

That's how I've been the past few days. I just don't want to do anything crafty. I just want to sit and read.

I did get done the labels that I needed to make up for my hand spun and recycled yarns that I'll be listing on etsy. I'm not completely in love with them, but they will do for now. I think they look a bit uninspired.
Today I have to get going on a valentines gift for my girls. A few weeks ago my daughter begged me to buy this fabric so I could make her something with it. It was on clearance, so I bought it. It's being washed at the moment, so I can so I can make both girls something. I'm not sure what yet. But, I'm thinking either a simple comfy basic shirt or a long tunic style simple t-shirt. I do love this fabric, so I'm sure whatever I do they will love and wear it. I'll post pictures when I'm done.
My "Ocean Park" yarn is finished having the twist set. So, it's ready for the scarf that I want to make out of it. I don't know about a pattern. I know that I want the scarf to be long, but there is only 138 yards. I think I'll just go for it and do a very simple stockinet stitch until I run out of yarn. I'm thinking I'll try for a 5" wide scarf. But, that may be to wide. We'll see.
Ok, so just writing this has made me more motivated. I'm off to get to work!

CPSIA - They Heard Us!!??

Yesterday I logged into Etsy to see this post: I'm soo happy. I actually feel like I've been heard, in whatever smallish way. It's not permanent, but at least they are looking into making the law better. Which is exactly what I and so many others wanted. I'll get to keep sewing for children and that makes me happy.

Danger!! Danger Will Robinson!!

That was the thought going through my head when I went out to the garage the other day to see this lovely contraption. I knew that my hubby was preparing to drop the engine from his car... but I never imagined this. He used the wood as a lever system to lower the engine. Or, should I say I used it. Yep, that's right. I had to help. It actually went really well and when all was said and done, the engine was safely on the ground without injury to either of us. I'm now looking forward to getting that car out of the garage! Nothing will please me more than the sight of that red thing getting towed away. Of course his other broken car, (AKA: His Baby) will be moved in to have it's engine replaced with the one that we just dropped. But, that means one less car in the drive way. And, a finished car with great gas mileage when he's done.

CPSIA - Blog-In

Today I am participating in the CPSIA Blog in. I know that I have already ranted and raved about the new law becoming in effect on February 10th. But, I wanted to do the Blog in anyways.

The following is an excellent blog entry written by Holly (Etsy user name Winklepots) and Gretchen (Etsy user name ChichiBoulie) about the CPSIA law about to take effect February 10th, 2009. I've seen this entry copied to many different blogs as it describes the situation perfectly. Please read it and and write your representatives.

“As parents and concerned citizens I’m sure most of us at one time or another have been confronted with the question of lead poisoning. But have you asked yourself what your government is doing to protect your children from lead contained in toys? The answer? They’re banning toys, taking books from schools and libraries, hurting low income families, killing entrepreneurial spirit and risking putting the economy in an even greater depression than we’ve seen in decades. I’d like to introduce you to their solution: the CPSIA.

Do you know about the CPSIA? No? Then I ask you to take a few minutes to find out about it.

The CPSIA stands for Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, a new set of laws that will come into effect on 10 February, 2009 and will impact many, many people in a negative way. Make no mistake, this is very real. View it for yourself. If Forbes, the American Library Association and numerous other media are paying attention, perhaps you should too.

How will these new laws affect you? Well, here are a few examples:

To the Parents of Young Students:
Due to the new law, expect to see the cost of school supplies sky rocket. While those paper clips weren’t originally intended for your student to use, they will need to be tested now that your 11-year-old needs them for his school project. This law applies to any and all school supplies (textbooks, pencils, crayons, paper, etc.) being used by children under 12.

To the Avid Reader:
Due to the new law, all children’s books will be pulled from library and school shelves, as there is no exemption for them. That’s okay though, there’s always television. Our children don’t need to learn the love of reading after all.
Article from the American Library Association http://www.wo.ala.org/districtdispatch/?p=1322

To the Lover of All Things Handmade:
Due to the new law, you will now be given a cotton ball and an instruction manual so you can make it yourself since that blanket you originally had your eye on for $50 will now cost you around $1,000 after it’s passed testing. It won’t even be the one-of-a-kind blanket you were hoping for. Items are destroyed in the testing process making one-of-a-kind items virtually impossible. So that gorgeous hand-knit hat you bought your child this past winter won’t be available next winter.

To the Environmentalist:
Due to the new law, all items in non-compliance will now be dumped into our already overflowing landfills. Imagine not just products from the small business owners, but the Big Box Stores as well. You can’t sell it so you must toss it. Or be potentially sued for selling it. You can’t even give them away. If you are caught, it is still a violation.

To the Second-Hand Shopper:
Due to the new law, you will now need to spend $20 for that brand new pair of jeans for your 2-year old, rather than shop at the Goodwill for second hand. Many resale shops are eliminating children’s items all together to avoid future lawsuits.

To the Entrepreneur:
Due to this new law, you will be forced to adhere to strict testing of your unique products or discontinue to make and/or sell them. Small businesses will be likely to be unable to afford the cost of testing and be forced to close up shop. Due to the current economic state, you’ll have to hope for the best when it comes to finding a new job in Corporate America.

To the Antique Toy Collector:
Due to the new law, you’d better start buying now because it’s all going to private collection and will no longer be available to purchase. “Because the new rules apply retroactively, toys and clothes already on the shelf will have to be thrown out if they aren’t certified as safe.” http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123189645948879745.html

To the American Economy:
Already struggling under an economy that hasn’t been this weak in decades, the American economy will be hit harder with the inevitable loss of jobs and revenues from suppliers, small businesses and consumers. The required testing is far too costly and restrictive for small businesses or individuals to undertake.

To the Worldwide Economy:
Due to this new law, many foreign manufacturers have already pulled out of the US market. You can imagine the impact of this on their businesses.

If you think this is exaggerating, here is a recent article from Forbes
http://www.forbes.com/2009/01/16/cpsia-safety-toys-oped-cx_wo_0116olson.html

And for those of you prepared to be stupefied and boggled, The New Law
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html

Did you know? If this upsets or alarms you, please react.”

My personal note:

Now, I'm not quite sure exactly how hard this law will hit the general public. I want my children to be safe. I want a tougher testing system for toys that I buy over the counter that were made in foregin countries. But, what about everyting else. What's going to happen when my daughter can't buy a used book at a book store? Will anyone but people like me notice the changes? Will our government right the wrong that they are about to do? Will parents start to wonder where all the used kids toys, books, clothing, sports equipment, etc went?

Destroying Handmade Children's Toys... One Artist At A Time

Yesterday I received an email and phone call from my mother about the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which will require lab certification that lead and phthalates are not present in toys or clothes intended for children under the age of 12. After doing about 2 hours of research I was almost in tears. I had signed this petition, and emailed both of my senators and my local representative asking them to make a few simple changes in the law so that small home businesses and the stay at home crafters could comply. In it's current for it will force many small businesses and almost ALL the home crafters who make anything intended for children under the age of 12 out of business. That'll just be great for our declining economy wont' it?

In a nutshell the law says that it is Illegal for me sell any item that has not been tested. No big deal right... wrong. Lets say that I make a piece of felt food bread. In that piece of bread I have used items that I have bought at the local fabric store. Including two colors of felt, sewing thread, and batting. To get this one type of item certified, I would have to send it to China (yep...china. There are only 14 labs in the US that can do the testing. It costs twice as much as in China to test and it takes considerable longer to have done.) and have EACH part of that item tested. That one piece of bread would end up costing me hundreds of dollars to have tested. Which means that I would need to make at least 100 pieces (and sell them) in order to break even on the cost of testing. And, remember.. I would have to be using the EXACT same materials to make all those pieces of bread. (so you better hope that you have a whole bolt of that specific fabric) Just check out how many types of felt food I make... I would need to take out a second mortgage on my home just to sell my different items legally. And, remember, that's using materials that have already been brought here to the US. So... the US must have already deemed them safe right?

The date that this becomes law is February 10th. I had no idea about this until last night. And, I would imagine that there are literally hundreds of thousands of home crafters and small US toy companies that are still in the dark about this. Just image what next summers craft fairs and state fairs will look like. No more fairy crowns for a dollar from some random vendor, no more one of a kind doll dress for your daughters Barbie or American Girl doll, no more one of a kind birthday outfit that you bought from a talented local seamstress. No more handmade wooden train sets or natural handmade baby diapers. And, good luck finding a scrap patchwork quilt for your infants bed. Unless someone can afford to make 100 duplicates of something and have it tested... your local crafter will be out of business. Me included.

Now, don't get me wrong. I am pleased that the government stepped in to introduce a law that would protect our children from the dangerous toys that were leaking lead. But, remember...those toys mostly came from China. From huge manufactures. (and now we are trusting them to also do the majority of our testing... ummm.. didn't they miss the lead the first time they tested it... who's idea was this anyways... common sense anyone?) What ever happened to making toys here in the US? The only wat to change his law in it's current for is to speak out. So please email your representatives, congressmen, and sign this petition, and do some research if you make any of the following items: cloth anything for a child (clothing, blankets, shoes, socks, hats, diapers, cloth dolls, toys etc), anything using yarn(hats, blankets, booties, sweaters, toys, etc), and anything made with wood. This isn't the whole list.

As a final thought I just wanted to mention that our children have been playing with handmade toys for centuries. It's only been fairly recently that our children have begun playing with manufactured toys. I'm not saying that I don't have manufactured toys in our home. In fact, we have many...but I've noticed that my children have always gravitated tword the more simple handmade things that I've bought or made throughout their lives. And, that's not something that I want taken away from them or any other future generation. I feel as though I've just been told that I'm a criminal trying to cause harm to the children of the US. But, who's the real criminal here?

Check out these links with more information and links to your local congressman and representaties.

So Long Natural Children's Products: A great article that gives an easy to understand explanation of the law.

Change.org: They have the petition going to try and change the law as it's written.

Handmade Toy Alliance: They have some great information and they have the links to find your local congressman and representative.

Etsy: So many crafters sell their items here. This is Etsy's take on what's happening.

Crafsters Best Of 2008

This morning I hoped on Crafster to do my morning browsing. And, I noticed that they had posted their "Best of 2008". I decided to take a peak. I was oooing and awwwing down the page at all the projects that I had somehow missed over the last year. When I got to the bottom of the page, my jaw hit the floor... My thread on Felt Food is there!! I'm so excited. When I started that thread I never thought I would get such a wonderful response. Thanks to everyone who posted comments and suggestions. Your support has been so great.

What's Been Keeping Me Busy?

I've been a very busy bee lately. I just finished up two good sized orders for felt food. The picture shows about half of what I've been working on. A previous post showed the mess that happened during the process. Most of that mess is now cleaned up. And, my table is sitting awaiting the next project. Hmmmm... perhaps it's time to start all those Christmas gifts.

Inherited Craftiness

I often get asked "Where do you get your "craftiness" and creativity from?" Well... the answer to that one simple. My parents. Both of them are very talented people who have a broad range of things that they are good at. My father is a woodworker / boat repairer and maker / home remodeler / engineer. And, my mother is a seamstress / painter / drawer / decorator / metal worker / home remodeler.

Growing up my father was always building one thing or another. The fist that I can remember is a doll house that he and built for me. I don't have pictures of it. It's in the attic right now. But, it's beautiful. My mother helped with the interior decorating and it lights up. Christmas of 94' I received a beautiful "treasure" box to hold all my treasures. It's currently being used as my sewing box. Another one of his works is a large art trunk that holds my yarn and artwork. Both pieces are solid wood and have great details. My eldest already has eyes for my "treasure" box. But, she'll have to wait quite a while before it gets handed down to her.

My mother's artistic-ness is mostly geared tword sewing and painting. Now. I'll admit that I missed the painting gene. I can't hold a candle to her talent in that department. Shown are just two of her more recent works of art. One shows my family walking the beach a few summers ago. It's hanging above my bed. The colors in real life are much more vibrant and there is a lot of details that the camera just didn't pick up. Also currently on display next to the front door is a painting of my daughters walking side by side on a trail. This one catches my breath every time I look at it. It looks exactly like the photo that I had taken that day.

This Norman Rockwell embroidery work was done just before I was born for my nursery. So much detail and work went into this piece.

So, now that the question has been answered all that's left to do is say "Thanks mom and dad".

My Summer In Review

The summer officially came to a close today with the start of school. My oldest started 3rd grade today and my youngest will be starting Kindergarten on Friday. I have to admit though that I've been anxious for the start of school this year. But, today I found myself to be a bit aimless and random in my tasks. The summer has been such a blur of constant motion, events, friends, birthdays, and vacations, that I haven't really had time to look and see what has and hasn't been accomplished this summer. I have to say that overall it was a wonderful summer. The girls had a blast and we did a lot of things together as a family. But.... what happened to all that sewing that I was supposed to get done... and all the “organizing” of the house and garage that desperately needs to get done... and lets not even mention all that yard work. Sitting here as the kids go off to school all I see is backed up commissions, a messy house and yard, and an endless winter of housework.

So... what DID we do this summer?

Birthday parties for both my kids and husband.... check
Family BBQ at in-laws for summer b-days...check

A successful summer filled with lots of laughter, fun, and family... priceless... hehe... just had to.

It's funny the things that stand out in your mind... usually things that are of small consequence.. but important non-the-less. Things like: I remember my youngest daughter in the “Gino Petrified Forest” museum that we visited. She knows not to touch anything... but sometimes she just can't seem to help herself. But, at the museum she put her hands in her shorts pockets and just kept them there. Neither my husband or myself told her to do this. It was just something that she did all on her own. I smiled the whole time as she walked around that museum and peered into the display cases with her hands in her pockets.

I remember last month when my oldest had a good friend over. I went upstairs to put away some laundry and I hear the two of them up in her bed just talking. Talking about how excited they were for school to start and which friends the wanted to see the most. Talking about girly things like what type of clothes they wanted for the new school year, etc. It wasn't what they were talking about that made me stop in the hallway and listen for a moment. It was the realization that my little girl was truly growing up. They weren't playing dolls, or dress up... they were just talking. Sigh....

For the closing of this rather long winded summer review I just wanted to send a “Love You!!” off to my mother. I never understood until this summer why she always looked forward to the start of a new school year. Now, I understand. Don't get me wrong... it's really nice to have the kids home all day after a long school year. But after a while you realize that it's really hard to get anything “done” when they are in the house. And, that the summer activities that revolve completely around the kids leaves you with a ton of work to do come fall. Thanks mom for all those fun summer months of my childhood. And, thanks for not going crazy come fall.

Twin Daisy

My mother in law gave me this great fuchia daisy plant for my birthday. It has a twin!! I love the color of this daisy and it will soon find a home in my garden outside. I'm hoping that it will bloom with a twin next time too. - This is assuming that I won't kill the plant before then. I don't have much of a green thumb.... but I will make an effort to at least get these great daisies in the dirt before they die.
